Alexander Black
Solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by Alexander Black.
Named for the 16th-century alchemical treatise, the "Rosarium Philosophorum" refers to a "philosophical rose garden," metaphorical of a collection of wise sayings.
So it is with all of Alexander Black's works, as each painting is a multi-layered treatise of ancient philosophy, alchemical symbolism, and a celebration of the shared human consciousness which is art itself.
Art critics say that Alexander’s work displays elements of Greek and Roman alchemical symbolism and mythology, Chinese screen printing, and Egyptian and African anthropomorphism.
However, Alexander rejects all compartmentalization of art, subscribing to the unitary-culture theory, premised on the anthropological principal that all cultures come from the same root, a primordial society washed away prior to recorded history.
